This week I’ve been actively upset that it’s not summer. Today, there was a high of 36° which is unacceptable. In other news, I did a big reorganization of my room in preparation for the new quarter. We'll see how long I can keep up the productivity. I’ve also been fed up with my music and actively looking for new songs, which has led me to some interesting artists.
Anyway, here are some things I enjoyed this week...
For My Ears
Songs
Olympus by Blondshell
Birds Dont Sing by TV Girl
Sunshine by Lee Sugar
Podcast
I watched the show and the movies based on the story of Elizabeth Holmes, and I’m listening to the podcast that inspired the show. Full circle moment.
For My Eyes
TV
Hunter x Hunter
We follow Gon, a 12-year-old boy, and his friends on their journey to become hunters and find his father. This is the first Shounen series I’ve watched, and it’s pretty good. I’m 24 episodes in and still not done with season 1, so it looks like I will be watching this for the foreseeable future.
Films
John Wick
I had a long flight, so I started with some action. John Wick is just a man who loved his dog and his wife. I respect that. Check out my Letterboxd for reviews.
Her
Wow. A futuristic Los Angeles love story between a lonely writer and his computer AI girlfriend?! Spike Jonze, I was not familiar with your game like that. And, now I’m crying on a plane. Well played.
Plus One
A pair of long-time friends promise to go to weddings together until feelings (and dramatics) ensue. This one is for the girl best friends and those with avoidant attachments. I was unacceptable called out for being both.
Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse
Miles Morales learns what it means to be a Spider-man and save New York alongside several other kickass Spider-men. Warning: do not watch this while experiencing turbulence. You will experience nausea.
Video Essays
Why CG Sucks (Except it Doesn’t) by RocketJump Film School
With Dune: Part 2 in all the headlines, it’s good to look into CG and why some films look much better than others.
My parents hate it when I watch TV with subtitles. I claim I can’t hear without them. Turns out, I’m right.
YouTuber
Olivia’s vlogs were my bread and butter a couple of years ago. When I watch her, I know I’m missing SoCal. She’s one of my favorite comfort YouTubers with her cooking, workouts, and day-to-day in LA. She hasn’t posted since January 2023 and I’m now caught up on all of her videos, but she’s still one of my go-to's.
Art
A Korean American Illustrator from Columbus OH who does freelance work. I desperately want some prints for my room.
For My Mouth
Recipes
Simple Red Lentil & Chickpea Bowl from Soph’s Plant Kitchen
This wasn’t bad, but not my favorite recipe. I had to supplement with a different kind of canned tomatoes and didn’t use any nooch (nutritional yeast) because I don’t like it. So, the dish came out differently than intended, but alright.
Roasted Tomato Soup by From My Bowl
This is so good! I will be adding this to my repeats. It says to roast the veggies at 450° for 50-60 minutes, but at 50 minutes my veggies had blackened edges rather than browned ones. So, I would recommend you check them periodically.
Tomato Orzo by PlantYou
This is an easy go-to. Cooking the orzo always takes longer than expected, but it’s always a solid dish.
For My Mind
Articles
"We Still Don’t Believe How Much Things Cost" (The Wall Street Journal)
Ah, inflation. Rachel Wolfe and Rachel Louise Ensign talk about what’s happening with the economy versus how consumers notice it.
"Self-Care In Season: A Gymnast’s Guide" (Voice in Sport)
Shameless self-plug.
Book
A Place in the World: Finding the Meaning of Home by Frances Mayes
As someone who likes to travel and flirts with the idea of living abroad, this book has some neat insights into the transitory nature of home. It's not my favorite read, but her lovely poetic voice makes for some nice chapters.
Till next week,
xoxo sarah
